Workplace Pilates

Pilates is a fantastic way to improve performance at work by focusing on posture, core stability, balance, strength, flexibility and breathing. Poor posture, sitting at a desk or standing can cause aches and pain in the back, neck, shoulders and wrists. By addressing these areas of tension, employers can begin to tackle absenteeism.

Pilates also has the added benefit of being a refreshing mind-body work out. By focusing the mind on correct spinal and pelvic alignment, smooth/flowing movements and correct breathing you empty your mind of any worries. Learning to breathe properly helps to reduce stress.

Stress is “the body’s method of reacting to a challenge”

Some stress is beneficial short term. However, stressful events that create ongoing stress over a long period of time called “chronic stress”, like a job change, can have a negative effect on health.

Physical illnesses caused by chronic stress:

  • Common cold
  • Insomnia
  • Hypertension (Blood pressure in the arteries is persistently elevated – long-term can cause coronary artery disease, stroke, heart failure, chronic kidney disease)
  • High BP
  • Weakened immune system

Vanessa offers courses of pilates at lunch time for small, mixed groups.  Please contact her for more information.

My original goal was to mitigate the effects of a desk bound job and an old back injury, and I’ve found the classes definitely help. I’ve also noticed significant improvements in core strength, balance, flexibility and posture which have really helped with other physical activities, such as circuit training.
